Rutherford High School honored former standout Alonzo Johnson by retiring his jersey during a ceremony at Tommy Oliver Stadium on Aug. 21.
Panama City Football Standout Honored
Johnson graduated from Rutherford High School in 1981 and earned recognition as an All-Florida high school football player.
Friends, family, former teammates, and school officials attended the ceremony to celebrate his career and legacy.
Rutherford head coach Albert Floyd presented the retired jersey during the event. The school also recognized Johnson’s family and displayed photos highlighting his career.
Johnson Went on to the NFL
After his high school career, Johnson continued playing football at the University of Florida.
The Philadelphia Eagles selected him in the second round of the 1986 NFL Draft. Johnson later earned a place in the University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame.
His football career made him one of Rutherford’s most notable former players.
A Lasting Honor at Rutherford
The jersey retirement adds Johnson’s name to Rutherford’s football history.
Former teammates and longtime friends also attended the ceremony, sharing in the recognition of his accomplishments.
The event at Tommy Oliver Stadium gave the Rutherford community an opportunity to honor Johnson’s high school career and his achievements beyond Panama City.
