Military leaders, elected officials, and transportation planners met in Fort Walton Beach to discuss ongoing efforts to ease Highway 98 congestion.
Officials Review Highway 98 Traffic Projects
Air Force Special Operations Command hosted the roundtable on Aug. 17 at the Freedom Tech Center in Fort Walton Beach.
The meeting brought together military, government, and transportation officials. They reviewed progress since their first roundtable in 2023 and discussed future projects along Highway 98.
The highway serves as a key route for Hurlburt Field and nearby communities. Traffic conditions also affect military operations, emergency response, and daily travel.
Short-Term Efforts Target Traffic Flow
Officials discussed several short-term efforts to address congestion. These include increased Florida Highway Patrol presence during peak traffic and coordination between Hurlburt Field and the Florida Department of Transportation.
Officials also discussed the Warrior Road Act and ways to reduce traffic impacts from roadway construction.
Santa Rosa County has also worked on traffic signal management. Meanwhile, Okaloosa County continues upgrades to its Traffic Management Center to help improve traffic flow.
Long-Term Highway 98 Projects Move Forward
The roundtable also covered several larger transportation projects. These include improvements at Hurlburt Field’s front gate and the proposed West Gate military construction project.
Officials also discussed the West Highway 98 Collector project in Okaloosa County and planned widening of Highway 98 between Hurlburt Field and State Road 87.
Other proposals include connecting collector roads across Okaloosa and Santa Rosa counties, developing the proposed Navarre Community Access Road, and improving the Highway 98 and State Road 87 intersection in Navarre.
The officials emphasized continued coordination between military, state, and local agencies as they work on solutions to the region’s growing traffic challenges.
