A giant hammerhead shark created an unforgettable scene after it was spotted hunting an eagle ray just yards from shore near Panama City Beach.
Viral Footage Captures a Rare Predator
The dramatic encounter resurfaced this week after Destin Life shared footage originally captured on July 30, 2025, in the shallow waters of Panama City Beach, about 45 miles from Destin.
The video shows the massive shark corralling a spotted eagle ray as beachgoers gather along the shoreline. Onlookers watched the predator move through the shallows while swimmers and other ocean activities continued nearby.
The resurfaced footage quickly attracted attention across the Emerald Coast for its rare up-close look at one of the Gulf’s largest sharks.
Why Great Hammerheads Hunt Eagle Rays
According to Destin Life, great hammerhead sharks commonly prey on rays along American and Australian coastlines. Spotted eagle rays are one of the species’ preferred food sources, making this type of behavior a natural part of the marine ecosystem.
Great hammerheads can grow to nearly 20 feet long and are among the largest hammerhead species. Their distinctive head shape helps them detect and pin down prey hiding along the seafloor.
Although sightings in shallow water can appear alarming, experts note that these hunting events occur naturally in coastal habitats.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission considers great hammerhead sharks potentially dangerous because of their large size. Wildlife experts recommend giving any shark plenty of space and avoiding attempts to approach or interact with it.
