New Thoracic surgeon expands Lung Cancer care in Santa Rosa Beach

Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast has expanded its cancer care team with the addition of a thoracic surgeon at its Santa Rosa Beach Cancer Center.

New Surgeon Joins Cancer Center

Dr. Christopher Ellington has joined the Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast Cancer Center on Mack Bayou Loop in Santa Rosa Beach.

According to the hospital, Ellington will work alongside the center’s oncology team to provide specialized surgical care for patients with lung cancer across Walton and Okaloosa counties.

The addition is intended to improve access to treatment closer to home for Emerald Coast residents.

Expanding Access to Lung Cancer Treatment

Ascension said more than 700 people have been diagnosed with lung cancer in Walton and Okaloosa counties over the past three years, with 156 deaths reported during that period.

Hospital President Trey Abshier said the expanded team will help increase patient access to advanced care, including minimally invasive surgical procedures. The hospital also continues to offer low-dose CT screenings to help detect lung cancer earlier.

Advanced Surgical Technology Now Available

Dr. Ellington is board-certified in thoracic surgery and completed fellowship training in oncology.

Ascension said he performs robotic-assisted procedures using advanced technology, including the da Vinci surgical system and the Ion bronchoscopy platform.

The hospital confirmed that appointments with Dr. Ellington are now available at the Santa Rosa Beach Cancer Center.
