Some of the beagles rescued from a Wisconsin research facility are starting new chapters in Northwest Florida, including one puppy now calling Panama City Beach home.
Beagles Begin New Lives After Rescue
In May, thousands of beagles were rescued from Ridglan Farms, a veterinary breeding and research facility in Wisconsin. Alaqua Animal Refuge received 20 senior beagles from the rescue effort.
The dogs had spent their lives in cages with little exposure to everyday experiences. Many had never played with toys or learned basic routines in a home.
Alaqua staff worked to help the dogs build trust and discover new experiences. Even simple things, such as playing with a ball or using a water bowl, were new to some of them.
Recently, Alaqua’s final senior beagle was adopted, marking another milestone for the rescue group.
Kiara Finds a Home in Panama City Beach
Six-month-old Kiara found her forever home with the Swanson family in Panama City Beach. The family adopted her through Big Dog Ranch Rescue in Alabama, which also took in beagles from Wisconsin.
When Kiara first arrived, the family expected her to be nervous and distant. Instead, she quickly became affectionate and wanted to stay close to her new family.
Her first week at home also came with a learning curve. Kiara initially did not know how to drink from a water bowl or eat kibble properly.
Now, she is eating, drinking, and playing with the Swansons as she settles into her new life.
A New Beginning for More Rescued Beagles
Kiara’s adoption is part of a larger effort to give rescued beagles the lives they never had. For dogs that spent years in controlled environments, everyday experiences can take time to learn.
The Swanson family is also continuing to advocate for beagles and other animals affected by commercial breeding facilities. Heather Swanson has joined efforts protesting facilities that continue to operate across the country.
Big Dog Ranch Rescue still has several rescued beagles available for adoption. Its work gives more of the Wisconsin dogs a chance to find safe, permanent homes.
For Kiara, that second chance has already started in Panama City Beach, where she is learning what life with a loving family can look like.
